My JRPG deflowering. Let me explain for Scarlet Nexus

Hello everyone people. From an early age, I constantly heard from my comrades with richer hardware about how great Final Fantasy is and what an awesome JRPG genre. Well, I’ve grown up, assembled my own uber bakery, launch Final Fantasy 15 and within an hour I’ll drop it. I really don’t understand why everyone considers it the standard of the genre. She seemed very stuffy to me. After that, every year I came across some JRPG and they suffered the same fate. But then I came across Scarlet Nexus and, gritting my teeth, I decided to give this genre another chance. And you know what? I was harsh from #@$%, but I liked it. But first things first.

We have a whole brainpunk world here. Don’t be surprised, I also learned about this direction only thanks to the developers of this game. In this world, people have evolved so that everyone has psionic abilities. Some more, some less. Well, those who have potential are recruited to serve in the elite detachment of the OPI or, in Orthodoxy, the Scarlet Raiders. They were created to prevent attacks from entities called Others here. According to the lore of the game, about two thousand years ago, an anomaly formed in the stratosphere of the earth called the Belt of Extinction from which, in turn, these same Others appear. These creatures are gourmets by nature and prefer only human brains.

We have two characters to choose from and please note that each of them has their own storyline. This makes it clear that the game will have to be completed twice. Also, everyone has their own leveling tree. Kasane, aka ranged. Yuito, close combat with a samurai look. Let’s get to the gameplay.

Here we have a slasher film https://bella-vegas-casino.co.uk/ in which default attacks from combinations and telekinetic abilities are harmoniously interconnected. And if with the first everything is clear, you upgrade your skills, get new techniques, memorize the sequence of buttons, and then play Beethoven on the keyboard, then with the second, everything is much more interesting.
At one time I was lucky enough to play through Devil May Cry 2013 and there, the slasher component really pleased me. I basically became acquainted with this genre only thanks to Devil May Cry. But what happened in Scarlet Nexus was something…
In addition to the already mentioned default attack, by accumulating psi stamina you can throw objects at the enemy, and with some elements of the environment you can stir up something like an ult and by performing a simple KUTE, destroy a significant part of the health or inflict a debuff on the enemy. But that’s not all. We also have party members with their own unique abilities such as teleportation, pyrokinesis, seeing invisible enemies. Which we, in turn, can learn using a special device called SAS. And the funny thing is, this is not even half the possibilities.

While also pumping up relationships with party members, additional perks are unlocked for the characters themselves. And don’t forget about the protagonist’s uber ultimate, when he is transported to a kind of devil trigger space where a lot of damage is poured in.

Having finally finished my bravado about how varied the combat system is, I can finally move on to the negatives. I don’t want to say anything about the visual. I just don’t see the point. He’s just gorgeous. Especially in creepy locations like the abandoned OPI hospital. I won’t lie, I took a bunch of screenshots from the game and put them on my desktop in a slideshow.

The biggest drawback of the game is the storytelling style. To be brief, the game is half a visual novel. Of course, I’m not against this style, but the main problem is the filler of the dialogues. Simply put, approximately 40% of the dialogues are filler scenes comparable to a shitty anime of 600 episodes. And the most offensive thing is that the plot is interesting. It is complex and quite difficult to understand if you only play the game once. But even taking into account my two playthroughs, I had to watch a brief retelling in which there are no filler moments in order to understand the entire plot. And then I found out about the anime and disappeared from life for two days. Well, in short, the plot is really intriguing, the characters are well written and everyone will find a favorite, but all this is ruined by tons of filler dialogues. But I will say this, if you endure, you can get a real thrill from the plot and, most importantly, from the missions of your party members.

Another big minus of the game is that the leveling tree is half rubbish. So that you understand. The first hour of the game, the character is an amoeba, which, if knocked down, will lie for five seconds. Therefore, you need to upgrade the rebound perk. Same with the double jump. And there’s also this funny thing: if the attack animation starts, you can’t interrupt it with a dodge. Accordingly, when you chop the boss and he starts to attack and your animations coincide, you fly away. And since we have a high-speed slasher film with festivals of colors here, I think this is a huge mistake of the developers. The only solution to this problem that I found is to experience telekinesis and thus the character will automatically jump away from the enemy and throw an environmental element at the enemy. Yes, you can say "Well then, screw up the boss attack movies, what’s the problem?". Yes, but in the mechanics itself there is a counterattack after a competent dodge and the game itself is quite fast in order to memorize the moves of each enemy, of which there is quite a varied number. And when you are trying to master tri content, this omission can ruin the entire chain of combinations.

Well, the gear system is extremely broken. But of course it will be controversial to talk about this. The main problem is that the default gear that you can buy from a merchant does not give a significant increase in characteristics. And if you want to build an uber cannon, you will have to farm resources in special challenges. Well, you can again say “Well, this is a JRPG. Understood? JRPG. This is fine". But no dear friends. The whole problem with farming these tests is that passing such dungeons has a score. And high-level resources are given only for passing to the maximum score. And yes, don’t forget about strafe, which ruins combinations. And when you’re trying to master tri content on maximum difficulty, you just need an uber gun so you don’t have to drive to a checkpoint every five minutes. But in fairness, the skinnies were delivered by Kamaz trucks. Not only can each hero be dressed up in different suits, but you can also put different little things on them and the hero, such as glasses, backpacks and other things. I spent the whole game playing as Yuito in a suit with a hood and ears. (screenshot of the costume is shown above)

In conclusion, I want to say. Scarlet Nexus is full of bugs, but I don’t care. I’m really crazy. I was happy, happy, sad, once I even shed a stingy man’s tear. The plot of stars from the sky is missing. But compared to what is now being shoved at us with shouts of “Game of the Year,” this is just a great game. And I’m glad Scarlet Nexus was able to free my heart of JRPG love from its icy shackles.
That’s all. Thank you for reading to the end. Well, I’ve already been advised a new JRPG and I’m ready to plunge into a new story.
OCTOPATH TRAVELER wait for me.
